Celebrating their 20th anniversary this year, Home-Start Guildford is a family support charity whose aim is to help parents give their children the best possible start in life. Covering the Guildford borough and Bookham and Fetcham in Mole Valley, the charity recruits and trains volunteers with parenting experience, to support struggling families with at least one child under the age of 5. Supported families may be facing difficulties such as post-natal depression, family breakdown, illness, isolation, disability, or may simply be finding parenting a struggle. Families are usually referred to Home-Start by Health Visitors, Social Workers or other professionals, and Home-Start’s volunteers visit families for a few hours each week in their own home. The support usually lasts for about a year and can make a huge difference to families. The charity runs regular volunteer training courses which equip the volunteers with the skills needed to provide practical and emotional support to parents with young children. Thanks to funding from The Wisley Foundation, Home-Start Guildford will be able to recruit and train another group of volunteers to help ensure the charity is able to meet the growing demand for support from local families.
